Our Hawks are ocean guardians!

What do you get when you combine teamwork, a can-do attitude, a watershed and some native plants?

A hardworking team of 4th and 5th grade Hawks have been working together this year to achieve Ocean Guardian status at Neil Cummins, from NOAA (National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration).

Not only have they grown their science brains by learning about the watershed around us, but they have also transformed the area outside the 4th and 5th grade classrooms with beautiful native plants and some new seating.

Earlier in the year, these students got their tape measures out to figure out the area they were working on. Learned about our watershed and how to protect it. Prepared the ground for planting. This all culminated over the weekend with these students, and their families, putting beautiful new plants in the ground outside the 4th and 5th grade classrooms!

Big shout out to Catherine Wolfers and Dawniele Pasha, both Marin Master Gardeners, for their time and expertise to bring this part of the project to fruition.

And THANK YOU to all the students, parents and siblings who have helped make this newly planted area a reality!

This is the first year, of a two-year program, of participating in the Ocean Guardian program. We can’t wait to see what the team achieves next year during the 2024/25 school year.

Read more in this presentation that the students have worked on. Kudos to the students who presented this at the school assembly on Friday!

Come check it out next time you’re on campus.

We can’t help but share all these inspiring photos…

First, many classes surveyed the campus and identified areas for improvement, and documented what they noticed…

Then they measured the area…

Next up, preparing the ground…

And lastly, the final part of the transformation!

Great job everyone!

This area looks amazing and can’t wait to see how it grows and helps keep our soils healthy and our watershed clean.
